Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Charleston WV
528 AM EST Sat Jan 24 2026

.WHAT HAS CHANGED...
QPF and snow amounts have decreased slightly across the area. Ice
amounts, however, have generally remained steady or slightly
increased. Despite shifting precipitation totals, moderate to major
travel and infrastructure impacts are still expected to occur.

The Winter Storm Warning now begins at 10AM as precipitation is not
expected to overspread the area until later this morning into
the afternoon.

&&

.KEY MESSAGES...
1. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through 10 AM today for
very cold wind chills in northern WV and southeast OH. In the
wake of a weekend system, frigid temperatures and wind chills
are expected to take hold for the majority of the work week.

2. A major winter storm is still expected to produce snow, sleet,
and freezing rain today into Monday. Expect widespread impacts
to travel and infrastructure due to snow and ice accumulations.

3. Weak system and front may bring additional light snow to the area
Wednesday into Thursday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGE 1...

Single digit temperatures and below zero wind chills are being
observed across portions of southeast Ohio and northern West
Virginia where a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through
10 AM today.

Sub-freezing temperatures and bitterly cold wind chills are expected
to return in the wake of a weekend winter storm and then persist
throughout the work week. This prolonged period of cold weather may
be especially impactful for those without power in the wake of the
weekend storm. Cold weather headlines are likely to be needed across
portions of the area next week, with highest confidence in the
necessity of widespread products existing Monday night into Tuesday
morning.

KEY MESSAGE 2...

Snow is expected to overspread the area later this morning into the
evening as a winter storm begins to traverse the area. Warmer air
aloft begins to push north overnight, prompting a transition to a
mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain mainly in the southeast half
of the forecast area while snow continues to the northwest. Mixed
precipitation becomes more widespread as warm air continues feeding
into the area on Sunday. Some locations could even receive rain
during the day. Precipitation transitions back to all snow as colder
air moves in behind the system Sunday night. Although precipitation
should diminish in coverage on Monday, upslope snow could persist
along the mountains into the night.

The Winter Storm Warning will now begin at 10 AM as precipitation is
not expected to arrive quite as early as previously anticipated. The
end time of the warning remains unchanged.

Forecast QPF and snow amounts have once again decreased slightly
across the area. Ice amounts, however, have generally remained
steady or slightly increased. Regardless of shifting precipitation
amounts, this system is still expected to cause widespread power
outages, and moderate to major impacts to travel and infrastructure.

KEY MESSAGE 3...

A clipper system and cold front provide another opportunity for
light snow accumulations, particularly in and near the mountains,
Wednesday into Thursday. The arrival of this system is also expected
to bolster the cold air mass already entrenched over the region.

&&

.AVIATION /10Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Mainly VFR conditions should continue this morning, then
ceilings and visibilities will begin to deteriorate as a system
spreads snow across the area during the latter half of the day.
Widespread IFR to LIFR conditions are expected to set in
overnight while the precipitation type transitions from all snow
to a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

Light to moderate winds are expected through the majority of the
period, with gusts to around 25 kts possible along the
mountains tonight. Northeast winds should also shift to a more
easterly direction by the end of the TAF period.
